To celebrate TOFT's 15th birthday in 2021, we revisited and perfected some of our most iconic and favourite designs from the previous decade and a half. These patterns helped shape TOFT into the company it is today, each one causing a twist and turn on our path to 2021 and beyond. These patterns follow our journey from the very early ready-to-wear collections through to the first creation of Edward’s Menagerie and to a brand new pattern that celebrates this year and the future.
Hope the Blue Whale is one of TOFT’s much-loved creatures from the Edward’s Menagerie collection, designed by Kerry Lord in 2017. A fantastic choice for an enthusiastic beginner, this crochet pattern is easy to follow and when crocheted in TOFT’s DK yarn Hope is utterly majestic and the perfect gift for any aquatic fanatic.
“I will always regard the creation of Hope the Whale and the workshop at the Natural History Museum as a true highlight of my career. Planning the incredible evening began a year in advance and I will never forget my first experience of being behind the scenes at the NHM. I was puffing and panting my way up ‘hidden staircases’ behind a very enthusiastic curator at 8 months pregnant to get somewhere we could talk about the (then top secret) blue whale installation. Hope brought a new colour with her into the TOFT range – Shale, which is the linchpin colour for this magazine. Seeing over three-hundred people hold their TOFT crochet hooks in the air underneath the freshly revealed diving skeleton of a whale was a powerful image and a feeling that will be with me forever. For me personally it felt like a real return to form following the birth of my second child and I got a fresh perspective on how many people TOFT had now touched, allowing me to see its potential to grow even further. Like it did for me, the workshop and Hope captured the combining of an interest in the natural world and crochet and I could see just how many people shared that passion with me. It really is what #edsanimals is all about.”
